Scott Joye

Gone Too Soon

This week our Horry and Georgetown Community learned of the passing of local attorney Scott Joye.  This was not a chronic illness.  This was not an old man.  Scott was a young, vibrant attorney gone to soon from what appears to be a heart attack.  The law is a stressful field and to many in it die young.

Joye was an active and valued member of the Horry and Georgetown County Bar Association. He was a well known criminal defense attorney, a partner at Joye, Nappier, Risher & Hardin LLC in Murrells Inlet, and a neighbor of mine.

Scott was an avid outdoorsman and was always involved in the community.  He served local law enforcement and fought to protect the Second Amendment.

Scott was a former law clerk to the Honorable Circuit Court Judge Sidney Floyd and was a former assistant solicitor from the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office before beginning his private practice in the Inlet. He attended Belin Memorial United Methodist Church and was a fixture in the courthouse and in the inlet.

Scott’s celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2023, at Belin Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet.

Unfortunately, death is not a choice.  Many people fear death, but personally I cannot fear something I cannot control.  I enjoy sky diving, race car driving and truth be told with out the risk of death it really is not a vacation for me.  I do not act to make it more likely to occur, but we can not avoid the inevitable, so I simply choose to embrace the blessing of living my life to it's fullest.  I would prefer to have 50 years of living in blessing, over 80 years of living in fear.  Therefore, I have my estate plan, life insurance, business succession, and everything in place, so that when God decides it is my time to return to Him, then those that I care about are taken care of.  Please remember to do the same for those you care about.

On a final note, please keep Scott’s family, his office family, and his many friends in your prayers as they deal with this sudden loss.
